When we moved into our home a year ago, we spent a lot of time cutting out flower beds in our front yard and lining them with stone. We even put in that black tarp stuff, and covered it with bark chips. We just never put anything else in. But this Thursday we thought we'd change that.
Unfortunately, I am very inexperienced in the flower area, since I am from a state where the flower season lasts about three months. Because of this, we asked Mary to come up and help me choose the appropriate plants and show me what to do with them. She got here around 10:00 in the morning and we ran to the store to get what we needed. Then we came home and got busy.
This is as close to a "before" picture as I remembered to take. Matt came home from work for lunch and helped us get started.
To my surprise, I actually really enjoyed doing this. I think I could get into gardening. (The mess behind me is the building of our neighbors' house. There are about four homes being built simultaneously on our street...it is very loud.)
"Bennett enjoyed himself also. His Maimie brought him some little gardening gloves to wear and he thought they were great once he understood his hands were in them.
These pictures were actually taken in the back yard a little later that day, but once Bennett discovered mud he couldn't get enough of it. Maybe I should have been concerned with his soil intake, but a part of me is just happy he is a normal little boy who likes to be a mess.
boy: (noun) - a noise with dirt on it.
Here we are, the proud gardeners, all finished. It took us about three hours to plant everything in the thick, thick, clay that they call soil here. Yuck. But we did it, and I am rather proud and excited about how it all turned out.
From the front porch, looking out.
From the yard, looking towards the front porch. The stick here is a magnolia bush that hasn't bloomed yet. Actually, most of the plants here haven't bloomed yet, but once they do our yard will have a beautiful array of colors.
The tree, which will also bloom one day with little white blossoms...assuming we don't kill it first, as with some other trees we have had in the past.
This is a night shot. We had a little leftover money from our gardening project, so we got some little solar-powered landscaping lights that look so good. It also illuminates our house number so you can see it in the dark. (P.S- The grass is looking a little shabby here, but that is our next project. One thing at a time, people.)
When we finished, Mary had just enough time to take a ride before heading back to San Antonio.

Hooray for Spring! We are ready!
